The last car show in Geneva showed that Elon Musk should not expect an easy life. Jaguar can compete with Tesla electric vehicles, and Hyundai Korea has also added to its fleet. There are a few surprises ahead: fears of leading cars actively electrifying their child. Approaching ten crossovers on electricity, which will join the race in the near future.
Attention Daimler intends to enter the electric vehicle race and release his idea – their first crossover on a pure electric engine. The car will leave the Bremen factory assembly line next year. True, little is known about Mercedes EQC technical equipment.
Presumably, in terms of capacity, it will be a prototype of the Mercedes Generation EQ. The company only notes that the car, as previously assumed, will not be a GLC variety, but will be a fully independent model.
Volkswagen ID Crozz
One of Germany’s main concerns, the Volkswagen Group, is stepping behind Japan. The company announced the release of two electric crossovers at once in 2020. Both concepts will be assembled on the latest MEB platform and the output will be almost identical in car characteristics.
The first crossover is the same Volkswagen ID Crozz, first presented at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show. This electric car is equipped with two electric motors with a capacity of 400 “horses” and an 81 kW / hour battery. With such characteristics, the crossover can easily overcome 500 kilometers without stopping to recharge, and will be able to reach a maximum speed of up to 180 km / hour.
The automotive community has been waiting for the third generation of the Porsche Cayenne crossover. In the updated version, the car becomes a rechargeable hybrid. However, this idea is not new – in the second generation Cayenne, which is also sold in Russia, it also has a modification with a hybrid drive. We know this model as the Cayenne S E-Hybrid. Now the letter S has been removed from its name and power has been added to the electric motor.
- As in the second generation, the Cayenne E-Hybrid is powered by a 3.0 liter 6-cylinder turbocharged engine.
- But the electric motor in the updated version became stronger – 136 “horses” against 95 in the second generation.
Electricity is stored in a 14.1 kWh battery.
With such characteristics the car becomes faster (now the speedometer will show the first “hundred” in 5 seconds) and more durable (the hybrid will travel 44 kilometers with electric traction).
You can recharge the hybrid crossover from a regular 10-amp on-board outlet, but it will take 8 hours to wait for the battery to recharge. However, developers have been thinking about more efficient options – it will be possible to literally refill the car in 2.5 hours if you order the 7.2 kWh charging option and use a full charging station – for example, EVA.
Nissan IMx Kuro
Last fall, Nissan launched the very ambitious IMx Kuro electric crossover concept, which is expected by the company. The developers have equipped the car with a powerful engine for 435 “horses” and a long-lasting battery, with a full charge where the car will be able to cover distances of up to 600 kilometers. It is not yet clear whether the series electric crossover will meet the stated characteristics, but will be released in the next few years.
The first electric crossover from other German carmakers Audi will start the assembly line later this year. The car, which was presented at the Geneva Motor Show, was sold out on pre-orders and, in the second half of this year, the first copy will begin to be delivered to customers.
At the end of the year, German concern BMW will present three electric crossovers. Expect to be released: BMW iNEXT, BMW i4 and, of course, BMW iX3, which are already actively undergoing test drives.
There is no major difference from gasoline X3, and that there is, in one way or another, connected to the electrification of transportation. IX3 has no exhaust pipe, and the charging port is hidden behind a hole in the left fender. With a full battery, the electric crossover will be able to cover distances of up to 400 kilometers. The BMW iX3 release series must be expected by the end of 2020.
According to its characteristics Enspire might become a serious competitor of the Tesla Model X. It’s been an electric crossover scream design that this is the car of the future:
- touch panel around the driver,
- track autopilot,
- a media system with wide connectivity to the Network and other devices.
Speaking directly about charging, the capacity of the battery is still kept secret, however, the battery accumulates energy with an efficiency of 210 Wh / kg, whereas for Elon Musk electric cars that differ this figure does not exceed 170 Wh / kg. Enspire can recharge energy up to 80% in just 40 minutes.

But according to the latest data, this concept has every chance to be serialized by the end of the year. First, people are now showing increasing interest in electric crossovers, increasingly photographing prototypes on California streets.
Second, equipment for car production has been installed in the former Pirelli factory area in Hanford (as evidenced by the leaked video). Yes, and third, the company finally started paying off its debt. Of course, there are still some problems, but they are quite solved. By the way, pre-orders for electric cars are still open.
Ford Mach 1
In 2020, the world will be presented with a new sports crossover from Ford, and the name Mach 1 will be recorded in history. The electric car will be a combination of the design of the Ford Explorer and the Mustang GT character. Right, this time the American will be equipped with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery, which will allow him to cover distances of up to 480 kilometers.
Sweden also has a good chance in electric car races. Already in 2019, attention Volvo promised to present the first electric concept, prototypes of which are the Volvo XC60 and XC90. In the same year, the debut of the serial version of Volvo S40 Cross Country (or Volvo 40.2) was not excluded.
Of course, this is not a crossover, but it still deserves to be in our Top. And the Swedes have no intention of stopping there. The company’s recent announcement about stopping investment in developing new internal combustion engines says only one thing – in the near future, Sweden will focus on the electric vehicle industry.
“Stuffing” from VisionE is exactly the same as Volkswagen ID Crozz. Externally, electrocrossovers are also similar. But questions about the prices of the two cars are still open, but worries still have time to think about them – almost two years left before the premiere.
The German-Chinese concept car company Byton, shown at CES this year, will also take on a serial appearance in 2019. The electric crossover has swung around Elon Musk’s ideas and promised to become a serious competitor to Tesla.
Byton took a futuristic design and a relatively low price tag of 45 thousand dollars. Next year, the crossover will hit the Chinese market, and a year later it will conquer Europe and the United States.
